Doula  Services

So what exactly is a Doula?

Doulas are non-medical professionals who support women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth and in the first few weeks and months after they give birth. The historical meaning finds it's roots in the Greek word Doule, which means "a woman who serves." The word once had a negative connotation, but today these special women provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support. The heart of a Doula is to "mother the mother" and support her in her birth decisions, however she chooses to birth. Doulas support the birthing woman at home, in birthing centres and in hospitals. From natural births to scheduled c-sections, the benefits of having a Doula are numerous.

Why should I have one?

Benefits of a Doula:

Clinical studies have shown that having a Doula results in...

  • reduced negative feelings about the birth experience

  • 60% reduction in requests for epidurals

  • 50% decrease in c-sections

  • 40% reduction in the use of Pitocin

  • decrease in Post Partum Depression

  • and result in shorter labors with fewer complications.

Women who receive the support of a Doula tend to have greater success with breastfeeding, self-confidence and transitioning to their new family dynmics.

Doulas do NOT...

  • offer medical advice or perform clinical tasks such as vaginal exams, fetal heart monitoring or delivering your baby

  • judge choices or push a personal agenda

  • make decisions for you or act as a go between for you and your care providers

  • replace a woman's partner or family members

What about my partner?

Sometimes partners don't know how they feel about having a stranger join them during such a vulnerable and intimate time. Many partners fear that they will be replaced but partners are more likely to be involved with a Doula present.

Doulas can...

  • help partners know how to offer physical and emotional support to mom

  • reassure partners when pain and procedures are normal

  • empower parents to make informed decisions when faced with interventions

  • and provide opportunities  for partners to leave the room, or get some rest and nourishment without mom ever being left alone.

“Whenever and
however you give birth,
your experience will impact
your emotions, your mind,
your body, and your spirit for the rest of your life.”
